Masters of the Rising Sun

Master Toyotaro Miyazaki, a founding member of the Hokubei Karate-Do Shihankai (Japanese Karate Masters Association of North America) and Shihan Kai Leung attended this historic event on October 6, 2007 in Purchase New York.

There was an elite black belt championship during the day and a historic performance by some of the Shihankai founding members at night.

Members from the Japan Karate Federation (JKF) National team came all the way from Japan to compete at this special event. They did very well and won the elite black belt divisions in Kata and in Kumite.

Master Morio Higaonna and students performing Hojo Undo

Master Morio Higaonna performed Goju ryu's highest level kata, Superinpei at the event. His Kata was very powerful and amazing. Assisting Master Higaonna in Hojo Undo is Master Yuhki Toda, Sensei Tetsuji Nakamura and Seigi Eric Higaonna (Master Morio Higaonna's son).

The Hokubei Shihankai Budokai was a great place to rekindle old friendships and reminisce about the past, present and future of Karate-do.

Master Masakazu Takahashi attended the Hokubei Karate-Do Budosai. He began Karate-do training in 1961 with Grand Master Tomosaburo Okano and came to the United States in 1971 to assist Master Miyazaki in Flushing New York. He is the current Chief Instructor of the USA Kenkojuku Karate-Do Association and operates two dojos, located in Mount Kisco New York and Amityville Long Island.

Master Koji Sugimoto, base in Miami Florida is a founding member of Hokubei Karate-Do Shihankai. He was sent to the United States in 1970 by Grand Master Okano. He assisted Master Takeshi Akuzawa (most senior student of Grand Master Okano in the United States) in Florida. Master Sugimoto is now the Chief Instructor of JKF Shotokan Kenkojuku.

Master Minoru Horie attended the Hokubei Karate-Do Budosai. He is a senior student of Grand Master Tomosaburo Okano. He has been teaching Kenkojuku Shotokan in Hartsdale New York since the 1970's.

Master Masaharu Sakimukai attended the Hokubei Shihankai Budosai with his wife and son. He is the founder of Chintokan Shorin-ryu Karate-do base in Jacksonville Florida. He is also a Master of the art of Jo-do (Art of using the 4 feet staff). He demonstrated the use of the Jo against the Bokken (wooden sword) and did Tamashigiri (Cutting practice) with the Jo on green bamboo.

Master Minobu Miki, base in San Diego California is the chief instructor of Japan Karate-do Organization (JKO). He demonstrated Shito-ryu's Unshu kata and Bunkai.

An-Shu Stephen K. Hayes a well-known actor, author and teacher of the Japanese art of Ninjitsu was a special guest at the event. His most notable acting role was with Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune in the NBC mini-series Shogun.

Special guest performer, Master Keisuke Mouri from Gifu prefecture Japan is a highly accomplished master of Iaido and Kendo. Yagyu Shinkage ryu (Iaido) is one of the oldest, most prestigious schools of Japanese swordsmanship, founded in 1541. Master Mouri's skill is of the highest level. Everyone in attendance was very impress with his performance.

Master Hidy Ochiai, the host and chairman of Hokubei Karate-Do Shihankai Budosai, demonstrated Iaido and Tamashigiri on an apple resting on someone's neck, blind folded. Master Ochiai took two years to prepare for this event. His group of volunteers did an excellent job in organizing this historic event.
